Macquarie Technology Group’s Cloud Services division has scored what it has called a “major” cloud migration gig from CareSuper, moving it from VMware Cloud on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to Azure.

The agreement sees Macquarie Cloud take CareSuper’s VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC) set up, which consists of hundreds of applications and petabytes of data, and move it to a managed edge Azure local offering.

Additionally, Macquarie has assumed the risk of the project and will deliver it with no upfront cost to the superannuation fund.

“Our goal is to optimise every part of our operation so we can deliver long-term value to our members,” said CareSuper CTO Simon Reiter.

“Cloud decisions must serve that mission – not just today, but five years from now. Macquarie Cloud Services stood out as a partner who could deliver both the technical transformation and the ongoing managed service maturity required.”

According to Macquarie, it will migrate workloads to a new Azure landing zone, modernise databases and implement platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offerings to streamline performance and efficiencies.

Macquarie Cloud head of Azure Naran McClung said this project is indicative of a larger trend, noting a wave of “repatriation from AWS”.

“For many organisations, rising costs and architectural limitations have made them re-evaluate. But it’s not just about moving away – it’s about moving forward. That’s where our team adds value,” he said.

In a statement, Macquarie stated its Cloud Services arm is “one of only a handful” of partners to hold onto its Microsoft Microsoft Azure Expert Managed Services Provider (MSP) status for four years in a row.

“We’ve seen our Azure team and business expand by about 20 per cent every year since we set it up in 2020,” McClung said.

“Becoming an Azure Expert MSP is not a lifetime achievement; it takes incredible dedication, assessments requiring dozens of the team to come together and – most importantly – an ability to deliver value to customers time and time again.”

Macquarie Cloud’s deal with CareSuper comes months after it landed a multi-year, multimillion-dollar partnership agreement with Komatsu Australia.
